Though our birthday was weeks ago, it's always special when Constanze and I are able to get together and celebrate our birthday. Mom made us a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, and the family gathered round to sing us "Happy Birthday." It is so incredible to think that our 18-year friendship began as two girls being paired together for the foreign exchange between the Johannes Keppler Gymnasium in Garbsen, Germany and Walled Lake Central High School in Walled Lake, MI simply because they shared the same birthday.
After eating a delicious meal of roast beef, mashed potatoes, and salad (a treat anytime, but especially after 4 1/2 months in China), we exchanged gifts. Constanze got me a gorgeous watch, and I got her a glass tea set for using with Jasmine tea. The tea ball is a dried flower that is hand picked and wrapped in its leaves, and when hot water is added, the flower "blooms" and shows its former beauty through the glass teapot. Of course, this special tea set was purchased in China, and the glasses are traditionally small (a few sips and you're done).
Not to be outdone by Chinese tradition, we attempted to honor the German tradition of Schnappszahl with a shot of liquor for our "double birthday." With no Schnapps or shot glasses in the house, we made due with a bottle of rum and the tiny tea glasses! Fantastic!

That is awesome!!! Happy BELATED birthday (again) I think I wished you a belated birthday last month too- or was it late Dec....
